A transponder key is a car key that has a small electronic chip built into it. That chip communicates with your vehicle’s immobilizer system when you turn the key or try to start the engine.
If the chip code matches what the vehicle is programmed to recognize, the car will start. If it does not match, the engine may crank but it will not run, or it may not start at all. A transponder key is commonly used as an added theft-deterrent feature on many vehicles.
