A proximity key, also called a smart key or push-to-start key, is a wireless key device that lets you unlock and start a vehicle without inserting a traditional key. As long as the proximity key is within range, the vehicle can detect it and allow functions like passive entry and push-button start.
A proximity key is designed for convenience and security, and it is commonly used on newer vehicles. Most proximity keys include remote functions such as lock, unlock, trunk release, and panic. If you are replacing one, the new key usually needs to match the correct vehicle information and be programmed to work properly.
When replacing a proximity key, it is important to verify the year, make, model, FCC ID, frequency, and emergency key blade style. Some vehicles also use an emergency insert key inside the smart key housing.
