An emergency insert key is the small mechanical key hidden inside many smart keys or proximity key fobs. It is used as a backup way to unlock the vehicle door if the key fob battery dies or the remote functions stop working.
An emergency insert key does not usually replace the full smart key system, but it gives you manual access to the vehicle when needed. An emergency insert key is especially helpful on push-to-start vehicles that do not have a traditional exposed key.
