If a key is not programmed, the vehicle may not recognize it, and it usually will not start. On many cars, the key may still turn in the ignition or fit the door lock, but the immobilizer system will block the engine from running if the transponder chip or smart key is not properly matched.
What happens if a key is not programmed depends on the type of key and the vehicle. A basic mechanical key may still unlock the door, but a transponder key, remote head key, flip key, or smart key often needs programming for full function.
Optional Additional Info (if helpful):
In some cases, the remote buttons also will not work until the key is programmed correctly.
