To identify a key blank, start by looking at the key’s overall shape, especially the head, blade length, tip style, and the grooves on each side of the blade. Those grooves, also called the keyway, help determine which blank matches the original key or lock.
You can also check for any numbers, letters, or brand markings stamped on the key, since many key blanks have an identifying code. If the key is worn or unmarked, a locksmith can usually identify the correct blank by comparing it to blank catalogs, key boards, or by checking the lock it fits.
