A laser cut key, also called a sidewinder key, is a key with a thicker blade and a milled groove cut into the center or sides of the key instead of traditional edge cuts. These keys are commonly used in newer vehicles and some high-security locks because they are designed to offer better security and a more precise fit.
Laser cut keys usually require a special machine to duplicate, not a standard key cutter. Many automotive laser-cut keys also contain a transponder chip, so in some cases the key must be both cut and programmed to work properly.
