Step 1. Prepare the materials

Step 2. Make sure the operating/old key works
Pick up the operating key and insert it into the lock. Ensure that it turns the lock smoothly.
Step 3. Insert new keys
Take the new keys and insert them into the keyway, just to make sure it fits.
Step 4. Take the back piece off
Unscrew the screws to take the back piece off then proceed with the rekeying.
Step 5. Rekeying
Remove the lock cylinder using the working key and the plug follower. Do this by inserting the working key and turning it to about 90 degrees.
Ensure that the flat part of the follower is aligned with the center of the lock. Push out the core outwards and just leave the follower attached to the lock. Be careful not to drop any of the pins and you might lose them on the floor. Now that you have the core that holds all the pins inside, remove each key pin.
Step 6. Install the new key pins
Repin to a 5-pin key. There are colors assigned to each pin key. The first slot is where you insert the silver pin, the second slot is for the purple pin, the third slot is for the gold pin, the fourth slot is for the green one, and the fifth slot is for the red pin. Each pin has a pointed end and the other end is flat. You insert the silver pin on the first slot nearest to the key and make sure the pointed end is pointed down. Once the pins sit nicely at the top, this is a good sign that your new key will operate the lock. The lock is now repinned.
Step 7. Reinstall the plug into the lock
You have successfully rekeyed your lock using your Schlage rekey kit. It’s time to reinstall the plug into the lock. Place the key pins at a 90-degree angle from the driver pins push the plug follower through and just allow the follower to fall. Turn the lock and see the new key smoothly turns the lock and operate it. don't pull out the key at this time to avoid shooting the pins out and you might just put the lock back together.
Step 8 Reinstall the back piece
You now have a new working key for your lock, reinstall the back piece. Simply re-screw it back. Once the back piece is on, safely remove the working key and celebrate because you have successfully rekeyed your lock!
