What Locksmith Classes & Training Is Needed To Become A Locksmith?

So you're thinking of becoming a locksmith? You're likely wondering where to start. While requirements vary by state, there are a few consistencies across state lines. In addition to requirements, you will want to invest in a variety of locksmith classes, courses, and maybe an apprenticeship to further hone your skills and become a reputable locksmith in your area.

Here's how to get started.

Know Your State Requirements

Every state has different requirements for working as a locksmith. Currently, the following states require a license that you can achieve after taking a locksmith training course and passing a state certification exam:

  • Alabama
  • California
  • Connecticut
  • Illinois
  • Louisiana
  • Maryland
  • Nebraska
  • Nevada
  • New Jersey
  • North Carolina
  • Oklahoma
  • Oregon
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Virginia

Plus these counties and districts:

  • Hillsborough County, Florida
  • Nassau County, Long Island
  • New York City, New York
  • Washington D.C.

If you live in any of these areas, you will want to find a comprehensive locksmith course, training, or program that prepares you for state licensure.

Enroll In A Locksmith Course

Hands-on training is an essential part of becoming a locksmith. You will learn a lot of technical aspects from textbooks and manuals, but a locksmith's most important tools are their hands.

Check with your local vocational schools or community colleges for training programs, or look for online locksmith courses that allow you to work at your own pace. Usually an online locksmith class will provide you with the same tools that in-class students would receive so that you get hands-on experience, even virtually.

Become An Apprentice

It's not a requirement, but an apprenticeship is common practice for many trade jobs, including locksmiths. While a journeyman locksmith is an entry-level position and makes less money than a certified or master locksmith, the experience gained from a knowledgeable locksmith is an invaluable resource for honing your skills and growing your future locksmith business.

Most importantly, an apprenticeship will prepare you to earn industry certifications, pass your state's license exam (if applicable), and help you build a reputation as a dependable locksmith with extensive experience.

Get Certified Or Licensed

Every state that requires a locksmith license is governed by a different entity. Some are regulated by the Department of Consumer Affairs, others the Department of Regulation, State Fire Marshal, or the Master Locksmiths Association.

If you completed a program or locksmith course at a local college or vocational school, they will be able to provide you with licensing information in your state.

In addition to a state license (if required), you may choose to get additional professional certifications on your own to further prove your skills and experience.

The ALOA Security Professionals Association is the most commonly recognized and accepted certification program for its members. They offer several levels of certification based on your skills, experience, and desired certification level:

  • Registered Locksmith (RL)
  • Certified Registered Locksmith (CRL)
  • Certified Professional Locksmith (CPL)
  • Certified Master Locksmith (CML)
  • Safe Technician Designations: Certified Professional SafeTech (CPS) and Certified Master SafeTech (CMST)
  • Certified Automotive Locksmith (CAL)

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
